Barbara S. Stein – Executive Producing Director
BARBARA S. STEIN (Executive Producing Director) co-founded Actors’ Playhouse with her husband Dr. Lawrence E. Stein in 1987. For the past eighteen years, under her stewardship, Actors’ Playhouse has grown into the second largest not-for-profit professional Equity Theatre in Miami-Dade County, and one of South Florida’s major cultural institutions. Ms. Stein, a resident of Miami for over 50 years, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and is an active member and leader in many community organizations. She has written, produced and directed a series of educational plays for children and is proud of initiating the children’s educational programming at Actors’ Playhouse and the National Children’s Theatre Festival and one of few National Call To Competitions for new children’s work in the nation. Ms. Stein was honored as a “Florida Woman of Achievement in 1996,” and her portrait is part of an annual exhibit for “Woman’s History Month,” with over 50 other women achievers, and was named “Marketer of the Year” in 1997 by the Dade County Branch of the American Marketing Association. Under Ms. Stein’s leadership Actors’ Playhouse was awarded the Coral Gables Chamber 1999 Diamond Award recognizing outstanding businesses in the Coral Gables community. Ms. Stein was featured in the inaugural issue of Rendezvous National Woman’s Magazine as a “Woman in Miami Making A Difference,” acknowledged as Miami Metro’s “One of 100 Women to Watch,” Miami Today’s “Best of Miami 2000 Unsung Heroes,” the Greater Miami Region of Hadassah’s “Women Who Make The Difference” Award. In 2001 Ms. Stein was honored with the “Spectrum Award for Culture” from the American Red Cross and acknowledged in Miami Today as “Best in Miami” Fundraiser, 2003. In 2004, the “Coral Gables Gazette” acknowledges Ms. Stein as one of Coral Gables’ “50 Most Important People.” Barbara and husband Dr. Lawrence Stein are proud recipients of the Ruth Foreman Award at the 2004 Carbonell Ceremony commemorating the founding and development of Actors’ Playhouse, saving and restoring a historic facility, and for nurturing the arts in South Florida.
